What are papillomas and what do they look like?

Damage to the palm of the hand with papillae

In this article, we will cover the following:

  • What are papillomas?
  • what is the reason for their formation.
  • where it is more common in men and women,
  • typical papillae.

Papules are benign tumors located on the skin, mucous membranes. The reason for their formation is the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted in various ways. The appearance of the formations depends on the type of virus that caused them.

Transmission paths

The human papillomavirus is transmitted by:

  • During sexual intercourse, including anal, oral-genitalia.
  • Household. The microorganism can be present on personal items, personal hygiene items, contaminated towels. Easily penetrates scratches, abrasions on the skin.
  • During mother-to-child work.

Possible self-infection if the virus is transmitted from one area of the body to another, which usually occurs during shaving, waxing.

The incubation period (the period from the entry of HPV into the body to the appearance of signs of pathology) ranges from several weeks to several years.

Papules on the body occur more often in case of illness, pregnancy, alcohol abuse, psycho-emotional stress, hypothermia, accompanied by a decrease in immune defense. The incidence of these formations in men and women is the same.

Human papillomavirus: types

Depending on the risk of skin cancer, mucosal viruses belong to the following groups:

  • Low oncogenic risk (HPV 3, 6, 11, 13, 32, 34, 72, 73, 40–44, 51, 61 types).
  • Medium oncogenic risk (HPV types 52, 56, 58, 30, 35, 45).
  • High risk of malignancies (HPV 50, 59, 16, 18, 64, 68, 70, 31, 33, 39 types).

Microorganisms with a low risk of cancer cause benign growths on the skin, mucous membranes.

Types of papillae

Simple

Simple papilloma

Also called vulgar, ordinary. These increases are most often caused by HPV types 26-29, 77, 63, 41.

Feeling tingling, burning sensation occurs on any part of the body. Later, the development of a spherical formation is observed, the surface of which gradually becomes rough. Initially, the tumor is flesh-colored and then darkens. The size of the papilla in the body is from 1 mm to cm

These neoplasms are single, multiple. In the latter case, the small nipples are located around the mother, forming first, usually the largest of all.

Their location is the back of the hands, the fingers, the gaps between them, the chin area, the tips of the lips. There are such nipples in the neck. The child's knees are affected because children are often crawling, infected with small skin lesions.

Plantar

People with these formations become infected with HPV types 1, 2, 4. The growths are similar to dry calluses, but have a number of characteristic differences.

The skin pattern is preserved on the calluses, absent on the surface of the nipples, the latter are smooth. The formation caused by the papilloma virus is painful, the unpleasant sensations intensify when you wear shoes. Inside the papilla, black dots are observed, which are absent from the calluses.

Tumors sometimes self-destruct, which is more common in children. Sometimes small bubbles are visible around the tumor. The latter turn into new nipples over time.

Flat nipples on the face

Flat nipples

The growths of a rounded, elongated, oval shape, increase above the level of the skin by 1-2 mm. Flat nipples are located around the mouth, face and upper half of the body. Nipples sometimes form in the neck.

There is nipple data on the lips, cervix in girls, penis in men, in the rectum, near the anus. These formations are in groups, merging with each other. Flat fleshy papillae, sometimes slightly darker than the rest of the skin, are formed under the influence of 10, 49, 28 varieties of papillomavirus.

Thread

If people notice that small nipples have appeared in the neck, then the growths are usually like threads. The second name of the formations isacrochordus. The latter are caused by 2, 7 types of HPV.

In the initial stage, the nipples in the neck look like small yellowish seals, then the growths stretch, become rough, acquire an elongated, rounded, thread-like shape. A feature of a similar nipple in the neck is a slender leg.

Most often, the acrochordus forms in men, women over 40 years. The growths also appear on the skin of the upper eyelids, armpits, mammary glands, in the affected area.

Marked

Papilloma on the penis

Formation data are calledwarts,are caused by human papillomavirus types 6, 11, 44, 42, 54, 51, 55, 89 in women and men.

Warts are small, single, multiple in flesh, located in the female, male genitals, around the anus. There are nipples in the vagina, small lips, cervix. In men, the warts are located on the foreskin, the head of the penis, inside the urethra.

Separate elements sometimes merge with each other, a tumor formation appears, which looks like a rooster, cauliflower comb. The neoplasms are characterized by very fast growth, a large lesion can form in a few hours.

Pathology has a recurrent course. It is more severe with concomitant sexually transmitted infections of the urogenital system (eg chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasmosis).

Warts that form on the cervix, especially inside the cervix, are more dangerous during pregnancy. Hormonal changes stimulate rapid growth, followed by tissue breakdown and secondary infections.

Nipples in the mouth, larynx

Their appearance is related to the activity of papillomavirus types 6, 7, 11, 72, 73, 57, 32. The formations are rounded formations on a thin or wide base. The mucous membrane around them is light pink, with no visible pathological changes. The surface of the growths is light pink, off-white.

Tumors are single, multiple, painless when pressed. They are located in the lower part of the oral cavity, at the back of the tongue, hard, soft palate, laryngeal mucosa, the size ranges from 2 mm to 2 cm.

Papilloma in the larynx

Overgrowth of the oral mucosa bleeds if bitten, darkens as a result of blood pouring into it. The state of health in the presence of such a disease does not deteriorate, the oral cavity opens freely.

When in an adult only one development develops in the soft palate, tonsils, tongue, there is a sense of the presence of a foreign body, a cough, the voice becomes hoarse. If the lesions become multiple, these symptoms worsen.

In children, the pathological growths are often bilateral, their appearance is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty inhaling, exhaling, which occurs after physical exercise and after complete rest.
  • Cough after running, playing too much.
  • Suffocation attacks withlaryngeal stenosis (abnormal stenosis that prevents air from entering the lower respiratory tract).
The appearance of different papillomas on the outside is associated with infection with different types of HPV. To remove tumors, you should consult a doctor. This should be done as soon as possible if the nipples are multiple, increase in size rapidly, cause discomfort and are constantly injured.
